And they're off!

Sven and Patrick have officially been whisked away by a Shell Helicopter to the site of the Kulluk grounding. Sven e-mailed a picture of he and Patrick on the heli but asked that it not be posted until he makes sure its ok.

Patrick  and Sven are going out to evaluate the archaeology sites in the area and document their current state. I don't know how long Patrick will  be gone-it could be a few days or more like a week.

There is an air of excitement and anticipation in Kodiak today as large boats convene on the Kulluk to dislodge it from its current location, 500 yards off shore of Sitkalidak island.
The bottom picture  shows the location of the boats just a while ago ( I got the picture off of facebook from a friend who posted it).  Two of the large boats were docked at the large city pier and they were quite the spectacle. One of them had a ginormus helicopter pad on its back deck. It looked like a large trampoline. The kids and I were fascinated.

I look forward to the pictures and stories upon the return of Sven and Patrick. This is one of the more interesting archaeology missions patrick has ever been called on to do!

Refuge Rock - August 2009.  The rig is currently grounded around behind the headland on the right

Ocean Bay Beach - August 2009.  This is a probable salvage access point - the rig is grounded on the headland in the distance
Boats moving in to position. Goal is to pull the Kulluk out.
