Actually I know it is a layer of around 20 cm of volcanic ash from the 1912 Katmai Volcanic eruption - the largest of the 20th century. Dwarfs Mount Saint Helens. It was dark for 3 days on Kodiak as the ash fell. Buildings collapsed. People really thought the world had come to an end (No contact with the outside world in those days) and were trying to evacuate Kodiak. Today the ash is just a thick layer of kitty litter.
